Orientation Program

An Orientation Program is conducted for children enrolling the following year.  This involves the children attending school for a number of sessions during Term 4.

This time allows the children to become used to the formal routine of the school, the parents used to the school routine and the teachers to assess the children ready for the following Kindergarten year.  A parent information session coincides with the first orientation session.

This transition to school program allows our future students to experience their classroom and engage in fun, learning activities, exposure to the school routine, and to experience safe play within our natural bush environment.

These three morning sessions are run once a week over three consecutive weeks.  The Orientation Program is run in Term 4.  Our future students are encouraged to attend all sessions.  The first session also runs parallel to a parent information session where parents obtain all the necessary information for their child starting school.

To help prepare your child for school, talk about what school might be like and why children go to school, enjoy reading together, and create time to play with pencils, crayons and paper.  More information can be gained by calling our School office on 9456 1065.  A meeting with our Kindergarten teacher can also be arranged.

Future 2027 Kindergarten Parents/Carers

We are delighted to welcome you and your child to our Kindergarten family! As we prepare for the exciting journey ahead, we would like to invite you to some special Meet and Greet Morning Sessions. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet other parents, get to know our dedicated staff and begin building a strong community as we embark on this educational adventure together.

Meet and Greet Morning Session Details:

• Date: Tuesday, 5^th & 26^th May, 9^th & 30^th June, 21^st July, 11^th August, 1^st & 22nd September.
• Time: 9am to 9:45am
• Location: Cowan Public School Community Room (old OSH Building).

In addition to these dates, we have scheduled a series of Kindergarten Orientation sessions that are essential for incoming students (listed below). These sessions are designed to familiarise our new kindergarten students with the Kindergarten environment that your child will be a part of. For the children, the orientation sessions provide an opportunity to explore their future classrooms, meet the teachers, and interact with potential classmates. These initial interactions aim to alleviate any anxiety or apprehension that young children might have about starting school. We incorporate simple activities and games to make the experience enjoyable and engaging for the children.

Orientation Sessions Details:

• Dates: Tuesday, 3^rd & 24th November and 1^st December.
• Time: 9am to 9:45am
• Location: Cowan Public School Community Room (old OSH Building).

During these orientations, you (the parents/carers) will have the chance to meet your child's potential kindergarten teacher and some of the school staff. You will also receive an overview of the school's policies, procedures and expectations, which will help you understand your role in your child's education.

Furthermore, the orientations include discussions about the curriculum, daily routines, and expectations for students. You will learn more about what your child will be learning and the skills they are expected to develop throughout the year. This information will help you understand how to support your child's learning at home. In some cases, we will also provide resources and tips for preparing students for kindergarten, such as basic school readiness skills. You will also have the opportunity to purchase and order uniforms.

After the sessions, we encourage you to have your child discuss their orientation experience with family members and friends. This can help cultivate a feeling of excitement. If they make any crafts or work during the orientation sessions, be sure to display it at home to give your child a sense of pride.

Best Start

The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment is an opportunity to gather information to guide the teaching of your child.  Areas of early reading, writing, their ability to communicate with others, and how they recognise and work with numbers, groups and patterns are all observed.  Parents are given feedback on these observations and you are welcome to discuss these with the teacher, if you so wish.

The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment has been developed by early learning experts in the Department of Education, and gives all Kindergarten teachers in NSW a common set of high quality assessment tools and professional training.
