Library

Students are encouraged to use our school library and borrow books. At Cowan Public School, we have an extensive collection of non-fiction and fiction books. We also have a reading garden where our students can relax during break times and read books.

In addition to the reading garden we have 'maker space activity centre' operating at lunch time on Wednesdays in the library. Creative activities include lego technic, story writing, paper craft, board games and illustration. All books need to be taken to and from school in a library bag for protection. Students have lessons each week in the library, which also affords them an opportunity for borrowing.

Our library holds a book fair each year during book week. Book week is celebrated with an assembly, character parade where all our students and staff dress up, morning tea for our visitors, and many fun activities for our students, including a book trivia afternoon. We also hold a children's writers' festival every second year where we engage the talents of various authors and illustrators to run workshops to engage and enthuse our students.

As parents, teachers and grandparents, we all have a role and responsibility to reduce screen time and support reading with our children.

Here is a link to the inspiring words of the internationally acclaimed Australian author and illustrator, Leigh Hobbs, who makes an impassioned plea to us all to promote the importance of literature in our lives.
